JOE MCPHEE - soprano saxophone, didgeridoo, valve trombone
Side A captures Dove and McPhee crashing a late-night house party at the home of Tom Carter and Rachel Orosco, where the energy of the young crowd is matched and raised by the two horn players.
Side B contrasts with a performance in memory of friend and guiding spirit Pauline Oliveros. The musical meditation uses the backing of a live recording of McPhee and Oliveros from 1986 layered with a recording of Sarah Weaver’s text “Sound in Peace”. McPhee plays live on the top as a solo, and then is joined by Dove.
MECA is an arts community center that has been the site of Oliveros, McPhee, and Dove performances for over 20 years and is the home base of Nameless Sound, the organization founded by Dove and Oliveros.

The project started with an improvisation that was slowed down in post-production. Then the task was to figure out how to perform such a thing live. It was not only a question of technology, how to pitch down these instruments. More significantly, it was a question of how to think more slowly. How to make ten minutes of material out of something that normally would be four minutes. How to improvise in slow layers of sound stacking up on each other. Music that takes influence from and pays tribute to the legendary mixtape DJ (Houston’s greatest experimental musician since Pauline Oliveros) — with sampled appearances from The Originator himself.
Studio recordings made on January 18 and 19, 2010 by Ryan Edwards.
Audience recording of live performance made on November 27, 2009 at labotanica by Pete Gershon.
Mixed and mastered by Ryan Edwards.

Nicole Bindler and David Dove
At The Icebox in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Presented by Fire Museum Presents
Recorded in 2022This longtime collaboration continues my interests in physical space, the dynamics between performers and their audience, and the setting up of chairs (a creative extension of my concert-organizing practice). The subwoofers always appreciate a large and interesting room, and the way Nicole Bindler’s lights express space is analogous to the way the sub-bass frequencies articulate architecture. Nicole and I have found several means by which to de-center performance in the long form. This particular performance was held in what was once a massive industrial freezer for frozen fish. (Hatchet marks can be found on the interior side of this venue’s door, presumably from a failed escape attempt.)
Sounding the Silos
Score by David Dove, performed by the Nameless Sound Ensemble
At The Sawyer Yards Silos in Houston, Texas
Recorded in 2022A commissioned score composed for performance in the former grain silos at Houston’s Sawyer Yards.
Rolando Cantú/David Dove/Laura Dykes/Carmina Escobar/Juan García/John Alan Kennedy/Gabriel Martinez/Bhob Rainey
At Lawndale Art Center in Houston, Texas
At They, Who Sound
Recorded in 2021This ensemble had just come to Houston after giving a 4-hour performance at Marfa’s Chinati Foundation, in the six U-shaped buildings of Dan Flavin’s untitled (Marfa project) (1996).
Subwoofer Trombone Solo

Recorded in 2019Pauine Oliveros/Chris Cogburn/Maria Chavez/David Dove/Sandy Ewen/Juan Garcia/Jason Jackson
At Roulette Intermedium in New York, New York
Recorded in 2007This concert, titled “Deep Syrup without the Sentiment” represented several points of an interesting moment in time. It was the first New York appearance from several of these young musicians. An encounter between a mentor and her mentees. A concert by Maria Chavez shortly after she had moved to the city. The tail end of a musical era in which what some people have called “The Houston Style” was being developed. (The larger half of this ensemble were teenage members of my workshop a few years before this.)
David Dove/Pauline Oliveros
At The Arches in Glasgow, Scotland
Presented by Arika
Recorded in 2005The closing concert for the 2005 Instal Festival. Performed through an 8-channel speaker system in decommissioned underground railway tunnels in Glasgow. Playing through Oliveros’ Expanded Instrument System (EIS) was my first experience in having the sound of my horn modulated, manipulated, and re-spatialized.

At DOM Club in Moscow, Russia
At Richter Fest
Thank you, Misha and Zhenya.
